This file box will NOT protect digital media! Read to find out why…, December 30, 2011

After extensively researching media safes, I found the First Alert 2037F today at Lowe’s for roughly the same price as Amazon.com.

When I opened the box, I found the note that many other reviewers were never given: it clarifies that you must open the box once every few weeks or so to prevent mold. Of course, a desiccant pack will take care of that issue as well.

But once I opened the lid of the unit, I found the **official** UL certificate, which tariff this box as 350 – 1/2 hr, which is a typical rating for most fire safes. Now, that’s more than adequate if you plot to use this to store only paper files. Unfortunately, the packaging claims that this file box will protect CD/DVD/hard drives/laptops from fire. Oddly, the UL certificate inside the lid refutes this claim! In order to protect your digital media, you must cap temps at approx. 125 degrees. There is a UL 125 rating, but this box DOES NOT have that rating. So, if you need something to protect your digital media from fire, keep looking. As for me, I’m headed back to Lowe’s to return it! I called First Alert and they thanked me, telling me they would “pass along” my concerns. I was not the first self to make such a complaint. I’m just glad I caught this error before it cost anyone their precious, irreplaceable digital media files. Now, it’s back to the drawing board, in search of a safe that will, uh, really keep my media **SAFE**.

I bought this to store some keys and various condo files. It’s nice and compact and seems well-made. I only wish this were a combination lock as a replacement for of one with a key. I’m worried of losing the key and not being able to unlock it.

We have had the chest for about 6 months now. All of a swift, it will not unlock, regardless of which key I use. It’s nice that the chest keeps things secure, but I would prefer that they not be kept secure from me.
