This gate works alright. It is a small hard to walk through because you have to unlatch the gate, then slide it over slightly, then swing it out of the way. This would be alright, but it is sometimes hard to slide the gate, depending on the width it is set at (it will sometimes get stuck while sliding over). Also, if you were thinking about staining this gate to contest your decor (like I did), I thought I would let you know that the hardware is riveted on from the factory. This means you will have to try to stain around (and under) it. Overall, the gate is high quality, built solid, and looks nice installed. It isn’t that terrible to walk through once you get used to using it. I am just not sure if I would place it in any high traffic areas you will be walking though often.

This is a solid gate that looks excellent installed, much better than a plastic one. And as long as the kid – or the pet – doesn’t repeatedly throw a shoulder into it, it will hold up well. Also make sure the mounting points are solid, not just sheetrock.

I was nervous this would be hard to install. I was relieved to find the paper template that was simple to tape to the wall that showed exactly everywhere to drill the holes for the upper hinge-plate in relation to the lower template (each set of marks at either end of the long strip of paper). After that it was simple to install the glue plates following the directions provided.

I would suggest that you tilt the paper template just slightly so the gate is at a barely perceivable angle so it swings open and stays open when not latched.

I am generally pleased with this gate. It is attractive and sturdy. My one year ancient runs at it full steam, and the gate handles it well. The locking mechanism can be a bit tough to open and close until you get the hang of it, but once unlocked, it slides smoothly and swings completely out of the way so you have a nice, wide opening to walk through. We did have some difficulty with the installation because the baseboards at the top of our stairs are 4″ tall, and this gate must be installed between 2″ and 3″ off the ground for safety reasons. To resolve this issue we used two small pieces of wood as spacers and then installed a board parallel to the wall, over the baseboard (we had to do this on both sides of the gate). It’s a small hard to clarify, so I’ve place some pictures in the gallery to illustrate. With this fix, the gate works perfectly and is very secure.
