Terrible point elements and concerned about mattress safety, February 12, 2012
    By

    Verified Hold(What’s this?)
I bought the playard to use as a bassinet and changing table for our infant son. We ran in to several problems or concerns that were not allayed after speaking with Joovy customer service. Let me start with the positives. The construction is very solid and secure. All frame parts seem to be more stable and secure than others on the market I have seen. The storage area has many cubbies and securely fastens to the base to hold a excellent amount of give weight. The changing table is very solid. It basically locks in to house to make a rather large, flat work area that is not flimsy at all (Graco’s are very flimsy and your baby will roll in to a side). One note of the changing table is that material is an easily cleanable plastic material. The only issue here is that once it gets wet in the slightest it turns in to an ice rink and your baby will slide all over unless you have some padding below. If you have newborn, the safety strap isn’t really practical so you just need to be super careful until they are huge enough to use the strap. And if you reckon “why would it get wet” then you haven’t had a boy.

    Here are the terrible items.
1 The mattress is horrible and we felt unsafe. There is a lot of extra material in the folds and when we placed our baby on the mattress, the material bunched up above his mouth. When he would turn his head he was basically smashed up in to the mattress without a clear breathing channel. This was the most concerning issue for us. The Graco has a padded mattress too but the material remains tight just like it would in a right baby crib. Our crib and Graco is our comparison to what a safe flat surface for sleeping must be. And the Joovy failed completely. I sent pictures of this to customer service. They took a picture of one they had as well showing me what was normal for the mattress and it was the same as mine. So I don’t reckon we had a defective unit. I reckon it is just their standard product.

2 The Joovy comes with it’s own special fitted sheet. The problem with the sheet is that when it is used in the bassinet position it covers the Joovy’s velcro to secure the mattress to the base. When speaking with customer service on this, they at first were unsure about this but then when they tried it on their side they agreed that with the sheet in house, the model’s own point to secure the mattress to the frame was compromised.

3 Fitted sheet use when we are not using the bassinet is very annoying too. Because of the soft point of the mattress (it has unusual, padded ridges), Joovy says you need to secure the sheet to the mattress using a series of velcro straps through special holes in the sheet (only if you buy the Joovy branded sheets though). It isn’t really that hard to thread the velcro through the sheet and secure to the bottom of the mattress. It takes about 2 minutes. My complaint here is that changing a Graco sheet takes about 15 seconds and requires no threading or skill. For parents out there, imagine the frustration of changing a sheet that requires threading, velco attaching, etc at 2am with a cranky baby that has just wet the sheets. Not fun. Terrible point.

All in all, I am disappointed with the execution of the point and especially the mattress safety issue. We finished up getting another Graco to replace this. Was also frustrated by Joovy’s response that perhaps I would be more pleased with the regular Joovy model that doesn’t have the bassinet, changing table, or storage bin features. Those are the reasons I bought the Joovy in the first house.

For $100 more than the other play yards, this one is more soundly built, has the sturdiest changing table, and won’t ruin the decor of your tasteful modern home. We have used this thoroughly since we brought our baby home and have traveled with it extensively. It has been indispensable. It has survived being checked as luggage mutiple times, and I have luggage that I can’t say that about.

I do have to laugh at the negative reviews for this play yard. The ones that say that the mattress is unsafe because it curls up a small at the sides are of that special kind of irrational paranoia that can only come from the brain of a new parent. I must know, I had it. Just question my husband about a series of conversations known forever as “Cribgate.” But the curl on the mattress is so low that a newborn sleeping safely on its back would never encounter it. A child that is older than a newborn is mobile enough to adjust their sleeping position as needed. As for the mattress being too thin, too flimsy, dipping in the center, uncomfortable for baby, hard for baby to sit/stand because it sways, etc. Wow, did they even ever place their baby in this? Mine LOVES it and I sware he sleeps better and longer in this than he does in his crib. He sits, stands, bounces, etc. just fine. The most laughable are claims that this play yard is hard to fold-up, unfold, travel with, is too heavy etc. Yes, the early gathering takes about an hour, but after that, one self can easily get it folded/unfolded, bassinet/mattress/sheet and all, in a few minutes. I am really a small suprised that it folds up so nice and compact and is still so sturdy. This play yard is so much better in form and function than any other play yard we have seen at the store or friends’ houses, it was well worth the extra $100. The only note I have that came as a suprise was that the changing table and side storage compartments don’t fit in the travel case and, if desired, would need to be carried in something else.

A PERFECT top of the line product!, August 11, 2013

A bit of a caveat: I’m nuts. I have OCD, and prefer to buy the top of the line, best of the best items for our children. I say this because it generally takes me at least three painful weeks of in-store browsing before I finally hoist any product into my cart (Sorry honey).
It seems to me that the only people who scored this item poorly due to complaints about the “mattress” are newbie parents who plot to use this item as a permanent sleeping environment. My wife and I came across the Joovy during an infinite search for a portable play yard/bassinet for our 3rd child to use during our annual camping trip. The Room clearly stood out among the other choices, and not only because of the lofty-by-comparison sticker price. The build quality is superior on a multitude of levels. Thus, I was shocked to find reviews containing complaints about the mattress.
So here’s the deal with the sleeping surface: THE “MATTRESS” ISN’T A MATTRESS BECAUSE PORTABLE PLAY YARDS DON’T HAVE MATTRESSES. If you’re intending to use this (or any portable play yard) as a permanent sleeping environment (in lieu of a crib or cradle), then it’s probably best to get an extra bassinet pad or cradle mattress to slip under the fitted sheet.
Austerely place, this is the best play yard/bassinet/changing table on the market. And that must mean something coming from me. Not because I’m a father of three who’s been at this for very nearly 16 years, no. But because I’m a psychopath who has to look at every available option before making a hold ;-)
