Tested all the Tempurpedics – found the type we liked – and bought the Dreamfoam model, June 19, 2014

    Verified Hold(What’s this?)

Shortly after getting married, my wife and I bought a Sterns and Foster inner-spring mattress on clearance at a local Mattress Retailer. Small did we know the personal hell we were about to get ourselves into – buying a mattress far too firm for either of our liking.

After putting a super-thick memory foam topper on the mattress, we lived with it for about two years before deciding to demote it to a ‘guest bed’ and buy something nice for ourselves.

Flirting with the thought of a memory foam mattress, we went to another local mattress retailer and sampled the variety of Tempurpedic models. They were austerely unlike anything we’d ever laid on – with soft contouring foam – yet stiff and firm support. We were both impressed with the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme (an 11” model), but there was no way in hell they were going to convince us to drop $3,300 for the King Sized mattress.

Having gone into that sampling of Tempurpedics, I had already done some exhaustive research on the off-brand (or smaller) memory foam companies, and whether their products really stacked up. The cheapest mattresses seen on Amazon.com, Walmart.com, and sold at Costco are predominantly made by the same three companies – all importing their mattresses from China. There were many favorable reviews – but generally speaking – those people were not very particular about their mattresses, nor were they objective in judging the quality of the product they received. I noticed a trend in the positive reviews which showed a tendency to speak subjectively about the mattress, and how it “made them feel,” which gave me small to no inclination about the quality of the materials or whether the mattress would last under regular use (many people bought it as a guest bed, which would only get used irregularly).

The critical reviews of these cheap mattresses (in the $200-400 range for King size) often made mention of manufacturing defects, permanent collapsing of the material around everywhere they slept, incredibly yucky smells that lingered for weeks or more, inconsistent thickness in different areas of the mattress, and how the mattress materials do not seem to really stack up to the claims in the product details (like using cheaper density foam than what they make known).

Because of these things, I knew that I wanted to get a mattress manufactured in the United States – and preferably, one which directly compared to the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme we laid on at the store. After MUCH research, we finished up with two brands for consideration: Amerisleep Mattresses and Dreamfoam Bedding Mattresses. They both had models which they themselves compared to the Cloud Supreme – so I started digging.

Between the two – Amerisleep was typically 30% more expensive for an equivalent mattress, but their claims of using “plant based” memory foam was alluring, as we didn’t want to be sleeping on a chemical-ridden foam mattress. Amerisleep was the front runner in my mind for quite a while until I learned the following:

    1. The plant based foam is really mixed into a traditional foam, and only in the top most layer(s) – basically, it’s not entirely plant based, and they won’t say what percentage of the mattress even is.
    2. Their better business bureau score was deeply troubling – many people reported not receiving their mattresses in a timely manner, and having an outright poor customer experience. Their parent company had similar complaints.
    3. Their reviews on their Amazon products looked astroturfed – ie. fake – with 10-20 reviews posted in a single day, none of them verified buyers. Why would people, who didn’t even buy the mattress on amazon, flight to the page and flood it with reviews within a couple of days? The majority of these reviewers had only one assess to their name – the Amerisleep mattress.
    4. The price difference was substantial – and would have run us an additional $400 for a 12” King Model.
    5. One blogger named “Lamb…something” was reviewing the mattress on a regular basis, talking about how incredible it is. She left reviews on the Amazon listing – and when I checked it out – she has a coupon code to her name, like an affiliate. It seemed like a huge conflict of interests that a assessor would be getting kickbacks from the company she’s reviewing.

By comparison, more I read about Dreamfoam bedding, the more I realized they’re a down-to-planet company, making a quality product, and standing behind their mattresses and work. I was amazed at the price, and surprised at such astounding customer reviews – and immediately assumed something was irregular (like Amerisleep) to have such glowing reviews. What I found was the rigorous opposite – nearly every assess was a verified buyer, and they were naturally spaced out over months of sales on Amazon. I knew Dreamfoam bedding was the real deal – and we placed our order.

    The item arrived…

    A much needed upgrade!, October 12, 2013
Logan Rogers-Follis (Scottsbluff, NE United States) –

My new wife and I bought a king-size Ultimate Dreams Supreme Gel Memory Foam Mattress just a few weeks ago after reading the first assess in this post. We bought it on Amazon and it was shipped quickly with Prime since it is warehoused by Amazon, though the box came in very nearly falling off of the mattress. The mattress itself was stil sealed nice and tightly and once home and opened started to return to it’s normal shape rather quickly and I couldn’t’ tell if it was done or not within 10-15 minutes because it looked full sized to me.

We never noticed any odor at all coming from the mattress. We did note our King sized sheets (had a waterbed queen before, so that is what we were buying) look excellent, but the fitted sheet doesn’t fit around the bed anymore so we will need to look for something a bit larger there.

As the previous refer has said it is much like the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme, but a bit more firm which is exactly what we were looking for.

We both use to wake on and off during the night and when we would get up we would have aches and pains that weren’t there the night before and now we take a nap through the night much better (fighting allergies, so that is why it’s not a perfect night take a nap) and wake up with only those pains you got from working too hard ;)

I hope to see this be in our bedroom for years and years and have already recommended it to my father and in-laws.
I haven’t ever owned or really slept on a memory phone bed before and I had heard they can be a bit warm, but so far it feels much cooler than my ancient bed.

BTW I’m 5′ 11″ 215lb and my wife is around 5′ 4″ and 150ish range and we are both back/side (mostly side) sleepers.

P.S. [...] is a site that helped me choose on buying this bed, since there are so few reviews for this model here on Amazon.com.

Ultimate Dreams vs. Tempurpedic, January 2, 2014

    Verified Hold(What’s this?)
My wife and I chose it was time for a new mattress, and a larger one. After some charm and research about these memory foam mattresses, we went to Mattress Firm to lay on a few of the Tempurpedic mattresses that others had mentioned in these observations. We laid on the Cloud Luxe and Supreme (softer and firmer, respectively) I would say that the firmness of this mattress is very similar to the Tempurpedic Cloud Supreme. We both reckon it feels fantastic not that we’ve owned it for a month – I probably liked the softer version a small more than my wife (which is why we have the firmer version), but I am now very pleased with the firmness of this one.

Quality met my expectations. It hardly had any smell, any of which dissipated very quickly.

My wife, like many women, take a nap pretty hot, and she was a small worried that it might be worse, even with the gel foam. She has no complaints about the mattress being hot, so that’s a excellent sign, although it is January… we’ll see how it is in warmer months. I have not noticed any issues with temperature.

    Sex on a foam mattress.
If you were wondering and had a mental image in your mind, as I did, that these foam mattresses that won’t “disturb your partner” would be like having sex in quicksand (yes, I know sand is an even worse concept), I can tell you that it is not an issue. Without getting too graphic for Amazon, bouncing is not a necessity, and overall mobility is just fine. My wife and I are 115/165 lbs respectively, so heavier people may sink in a bit more I suppose, but I bet it would be just fine.

I reckon it is a fantastic mattress and would certainly recommend it.

I don’t give out 5 stars easily, so consider my four star as a very high rating.
