We ordered 2 of these to block off our kitchen as our new 3 year ancient foster son likes to “help us cook” and “make toast”. After rescuing numerous items from the turned-on microwave and a toasting cell phone, we needed to keep him out of the kitchen.

The gate itself is sturdy enough. The method by which it connects to the wall is a joke. The gate rests on 4 eye bolts. Which, if installed at the heights listed in the directions, means that the weight is on the bottom eyebolt and the top hook barely is even in the top eyebolt. The gate also rests and drags on the floor at this height. The “latch” is basically worthless. It is a tiny small flip that pops out of the way. It does not lock the gate closed by any means. With a modicum of effort, you could austerely lift the entire gate and it would pop open.

If you do want to use the latch propery, you need to bend way down as it is at knee level. You then flip the small switch and lift the gate off the eyebolts. If you aren’t careful, when both opening and relatching the gate, you can even accidentally lift the gate off the bolts on the far side. Within 48 hours, our 3 year ancient was able to easily open the gate.

I would ONLY recommend this gate in a very out-of-the-way area everywhere the gate will not need to be opened/closed often and for pets. Not for children.

I will be sending them back and paying the extra money for the Evenflo Top of Stair gate. My mother and I have several of these and they are sturdy, simple for adults and older children to open, but impossible for a 3 year ancient. They also still look and work fantastic after 10 years. I tried to save money and have verified that you do get what you pay for.

We’ve had one of these gates for years and recently needed another one after we adopted a new dog. The gate is tall enough that dogs respect it — once they realize what it’s there for. Most of our dogs have jumped over it at first.

The advantage to this gate is that you don’t have to step over anything to go through the gate, unlike most other gates on the market now. It glides open easily. The installation is simple, too.

We are using the gate on our bedroom door to keep our boys (two felines) out of the bed at night. It swings flat against wall and stays out of the way when not in use.
