Fantastic Gate for Larger Openings, Development 8, 2014

I am using this gate to keep my dog contained in the kitchen. It did take awhile to set up, as they did not tell you how to take the plastic foot pieces off the end pieces (they are on there only if you plot to use the extenders, which I did not). Just FYI – if you aren’t using the extra extenders, TWIST the plastic foot pieces off – the entire piece is one section and austerely turn it to unscrew. It took me a few minutes to figure that out because I didn’t want to break them in case I needed them down the road.

Also note that the gate is NOT WHITE! It is more of a cream color. So if you are looking for a gate that is white to contest your decor, look elsewhere. But it didn’t bother me, as the cream color looks fine with the color scheme in my home.

Because I am using this as a dog gate as a replacement for of a baby gate, and it’s in a high-traffic area, my brother took a small screw and wedged open the small thumb lock on the door. Otherwise, you would have to use your thumb to slide back the lock AND lift the gate up and push to open the gate. With the screw screwed in the thumb lock to keep it unlocked, all I have to do now is lift the gate and push with one hand. I’m mentioning this so that anyone intending to use this for a child, if you’re holding the child, opening the gate could be quite the process because it would take two hands to do. Since I don’t have to worry about a child figuring out how to lift and push the gate, I had it wedged to make it simpler for myself and my 9 year ancient son to quickly and easily be able to open the gate.

Note also that this gate is NOT difficulty mounted and has to be screwed into the wall. I didn’t mind that, but some people (especially those who are renters) might.

Overall, this is a gorgeous and sturdy metal cream-colored gate perfect for entryways with a 44″+ opening. Simple to use (with a slight modification). I will note that several people who have come into my home have tripped on the bottom rail while going through the gate, but I never have that problem. But I reckon most gates have that bottom rail (that’s how the door stays closed!) so I didn’t drop any points because of that – people just need to learn to pick up their feet when they walk! :P

My reason for 4 stars as a replacement for of 5: Lost points for incorrect color in the description (NOT a pure white!) and because if I didn’t modify the thumb relief, it would take two hands to open the gate. Wedging the thumb relief is not something I would recommend if you plot to use this as a baby gate, but for a puppy, no problem.

Hard to rate because the product has both pros and cons.

The Pro: It’s a gorgeous gate, well made. I used to work in wrought Iron point and its manufacturing process, so this gate really meets 5 Stars. It’s also adjustable to meet the rigorous opening within the allowable overall size.

The Cons: Very poor opening and closing Latch. One has to push a button plus lift the gate at same time to open. I can see that is meant to be childproof, BUT the closing is nuts. One has to result in back the gate by lifting the gate over again and fit into an rigorous slot.
Well it’s not so simple, because you have to push the button over again, and make a perfect alignment, because bottom of the gate also has to fit perfectly at same time. My Gate was off by 1/8 inch on the bottom which prevented the top to fall into the slot on the top. It required jiggling to close the gate.
Further at night time you need a Flashlight to see the slot whether it’s the top or bottom preventing the gate to drop into the lock position. Nothing is simple here. Very poor point. A Door must simple close with one hand, but you need two hands with this gate. One hand to lift, the other to feel the lock between your 2 fingers as a guide, this since gate opens and closes in both directions.
The competitor’s Gate will only open in one direction, the reason being, a gate needs a “stop” to know when to lock. With this model your fingers are the “stop”. On a normal Door the Jamb is the stop.
The Gate would be OK in the daylight, if you don’t mind fiddling, but we were plotting to house the Gate into the bedroom from keeping our dog from jumping on our bed while we take a nap. I don’t want to turn the light on, just to close a Gate, if have to go to the bathroom at night.
One suggestion to the Maker: If you don’t want to redesign the top lock, at least widen the 2 Bottom Gate Guides by 1/8 inch, to allow the Gate to drop down without much ado.

We have had this gate for about 3 years. It has worked flawlessly, and can be removed and place back in house in approximately 10 seconds.
